Parc de Beaulieu

About
The last remnant of the Loire's wetlands on the Ile de Nantes, the CRAPA (Circuit Rustique d’Activité de Plein Air/Rural Open Air Activity Circuit) was laid out at the start of the 1980s when the Beaulieu area on the east of the island was urbanised. A large green space, it’s the most "natural" of all the parks in Nantes. Its eastern end is classed as an area of natural interest for its flora and fauna. In the large pastures, children's games, play areas and barbecues provide an ideal space to relax.
From a floodplain to a space for relaxation
The île Beaulieu was one of the ten islands in the Loire that were brought together to make up the current île de Nantes. After the Second World War, it was filled in and its height raised by 5 metres. It was then urbanised in the 1960s. At its eastern tip, the land maintains its original level. The Circuit Rustique d’Activité de Plein Air (Rural Open Air Activity Circuit) (CRAPA) was built here in 1985 and was converted in 2013.
A refuge for a wide range of fauna
The gardeners leave the tip of the park to grow as nature intended. Trees which die are left where they are and provide shelter for a wide range of animals. The banks change as they erode. Herons, coots, kingfishers and swifts all come to visit. In the public space, mowing the meadows later than usual means that butterflies and insects can flourish.
A pair of “little owls” (Athena noctua) the only two seen in Nantes, also nest in the park.
The old branch, which is now connected to the Loire via a weir, is home to the Loire's frogs and fish.
Games for children and collective barbecues The children’s playground equipment and public barbecues were renovated in 2005. A visit to this park is the ideal opportunity to relax with the city as a distant backdrop.
