Jardin des Fonderies

About
The first covered public garden in Nantes took shape beneath the bays of the former Fonderies de l’Atlantique in 2009.
Designed by the Doazan-Hirschberger agency, this garden brings together exotic plant species which recall the long distance journeys made by Nantes's ships, these same ships whose propellers were once manufactured on this site.
A little bit of history about the Fonderies
Built in 1908 on the site, the foundry of the Babin- Chevaye brothers, the "Nantaise de fonderies", manufactured propellers and turbines for ship building from the 1920s onwards. This is where the "Nantial" alloy was invented, which was used to cast the propellers for the France, the 3rd ship to carry that name, which was built at Saint-Nazaire in 1960. The series of recessions from the 1970s onwards led to the site being abandoned in 2001. It was converted into a garden in 2009. The bays, the ovens, the swing bridge and the moulding tanks, which are now planting tanks, have been conserved and restored.
Heathers in the north
Camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons and magnolias grow around the edge of the bays. The symbol of Nantes’ horticultural landscape, they add touches of colour from spring onwards.
A tropical atmosphere to the south
The palm trees, banana trees and fern bushes transport visitors into a tropical atmosphere. Beside them, grasses, agaves and cacti recall arid landscapes.
The bays, supporting an innovative garden
Rain water is collected on the roof of the bays and is stored in large tanks which are used to water the garden. In the morning, a mist spray provides the moisture that some foliage needs. Along the metal structures, glycines, passion flowers and climbing hydrangeas colonise the metal. And in the evening, the lush foliage is enhanced with white light.
